In Johannesburg, South Africa, on November 12, 2025, history was made as AIG Aishatu Abubakar Baju, OON, mni, was unanimously elected—unopposed—as the first President of the Association of Women in Law Enforcement in Africa(AWLEA). The newly formed association is the first of its kind, created to address the unique needs and aspirations of African women serving in law enforcement across the continent.
In her stirring acceptance speech, AIG Baju reflected on the journey that led to this moment:

She celebrated the culmination of three years of tireless effort to establish the association, emphasizing its foundation on sisterhood, solidarity, justice, and service. Her speech outlined a bold and inclusive vision:

“Our vision is clear: to create a platform where women in law enforcement can support, empower, and uplift each other. To break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and shatter glass ceilings.”

AIG Baju pledged to lead with integrity and purpose, committing to:

• Building a robust network of support and mentorship

• Developing leadership and capacity-building programs

• Advocating for gender-inclusive policies

• Collaborating with stakeholders to address community challenges

She closed with a rallying call to her colleagues:

“Let us walk this path together, as sisters, as colleagues, and as champions of justice and equality. In the words of CP Shanta of the Bahamas, ‘Blossom where you are planted.’ Together, we can, and we will, make a difference!”

The event drew delegates from over 30 African nations, marking a transformative moment for women in law enforcement. Under AIG Baju’s leadership, AWLEA is poised to become a powerful force for change, equity, and excellence across Africa’s security landscape
