Lagos Police Detain ASP, Entire Patrol Team Over Loss of AK-47 and Ammo

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command has issued a follow-up report regarding the loss of an AK-47 rifle during a stop-and-search operation by a patrol team from the Surulere Division.

According to a police wireless message obtained by Journalists, the incident occurred on April 30, 2025, around 3:00 AM, under the Ojuelegba bridge. The message, signed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police for Area B, Apapa, detailed the loss of the firearm, including its serial number and 10 rounds of ammunition. The earlier communication, dated May 1, 2025, had already noted the missing weapon.

The police memo indicates that during an attempt to arrest the riders of a commercial motorcycle (okada), a scuffle broke out, resulting in the AK-47 being snatched from Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Lucky Ebalumenfoh. A suspect, identified as 19-year-old Mustapher Abubakar, was apprehended at the scene and is currently cooperating with the investigation.

The entire patrol team involved in the incident, including ASP Ebalumenfoh, is undergoing disciplinary procedures, with all members currently detained. The police are actively working to recover the missing firearm, and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), tactical teams, and anti-crime units have been instructed to assist in the recovery process.

The police memo emphasized the importance of strict compliance with the recovery effort and instructed all units to report any findings back to the originating unit. Further updates on the situation will be shared as they become available.
