The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is charting a bold path toward innovation and inclusivity under the leadership of its Head of National Office (HNO), Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut. Speaking during a luncheon at the WAEC Testing and Training Center, Ogba, Lagos, Dr. Dangut outlined the council’s recent successes and unveiled its ambitious plans for the future.

Dr. Dangut, a veteran administrator from Plateau State who joined WAEC in 1998, highlighted the council’s resolve to adapt to technological advancements despite initial challenges. He recalled how WAEC overcame skepticism when it first introduced Computer-Based Testing (CBT), addressing concerns over illiteracy and limited computer literacy.

By educating examiners and maintaining fairness, the council recorded its highest success rates and a significant reduction in examination malpractice during CBT implementation.

He emphasized that WAEC’s work must be effectively communicated to ensure its impact is recognized. “If we have what we do and people don’t know because we don’t send it out, it is as good as it is not existing,” he said.
Looking ahead, Dr. Dangut revealed WAEC’s plans to replace traditional pen-and-paper methods with electronic devices for attendance marking, a move expected to streamline operations. The council is also improving its digital certificate system to make certificates more accessible via mobile devices.

A key aspect of WAEC’s transformation is its commitment to inclusivity. Dr. Dangut announced a special project aimed at better assessing candidates with severe special needs, addressing gaps in the current curriculum. WAEC is collaborating with government agencies and private stakeholders to develop a state-of-the-art education framework that ensures equitable learning opportunities for all candidates.

He further disclosed plans to expand Computer-Based Testing to more schools by 2025, pending government approval. “Some schools are already prepared for CBT, and we are optimistic about rolling this out to students who are ready,” he noted.

The luncheon brought together policymakers, educators, and media professionals, who lauded WAEC’s visionary approach. Dr. Dangut reaffirmed WAEC’s commitment to driving educational excellence across the region. “WAEC is going digital, and we are facilitating seamless access to our services. Our goal is to ensure that every candidate, regardless of circumstance, has a fair opportunity to succeed,” he concluded.

WAEC’s initiatives signal a transformative era in educational assessment, positioning the council as a leader in embracing technology and fostering inclusivity.
