A devastating road crash in Anambra has claimed the lives of 12 students from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures in Nigeria. The Nigerian government has developed the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy (NRSS), a medium-term plan aimed at achieving the Road Safety Vision ¹ ² ³ ⁴. However, more needs to be done to ensure citizen safety.

Key Statistics:

– 19.9% of university students are unaware of road safety measures regarding alcohol and substance consumption while driving
– 20% are unaware of seat belt use
– 6.1% are unaware of mobile phone use regulations
– Students show better knowledge of traffic signs, indicating a need for targeted education initiatives

Call to Action:

We urge the government, educational institutions, and stakeholders to:

– *Implement Road Safety Education*: Evidence-based programs and initiatives in schools
– *Embed Road Safety in Curriculum*: Timely and developmentally appropriate education for all year levels
– *Support Targeted Initiatives*: Smart Steps and Keys for Life for parents, caregivers, and young people
– *Enhance Awareness Campaigns*: Focus on critical road safety issues

Together, we can prevent tragedies and ensure a safer Nigeria.
