The latest Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2023-24 reveals that approximately 15% of young Nigerian women aged 15-19 have experienced pregnancy, with the highest rates in rural areas, particularly in the Northwest and Northeast regions. The report, released in Abuja, highlights the serious implications of teenage pregnancy, including maternal health risks, loss of educational opportunities, and the perpetuation of poverty.

Among these young women, 11% have given birth, 4% are currently pregnant, and 2% have experienced pregnancy loss, indicating significant gaps in healthcare access. Teenage pregnancy rates are notably higher among those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds with limited education.

Health Minister Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate discussed initiatives to reduce these rates, including sexual and reproductive health education, improved contraceptive access, and youth support programs. Dr. Aminu Magashi of the Africa Health Budget Network emphasized the need for comprehensive sexuality education and enhanced healthcare services, particularly for adolescents in rural areas.

The importance of stigma-free, youth-friendly health services was underscored, as many teenagers avoid seeking contraceptive help due to societal judgment. Mrs. Chika Offor from the Vaccine Network for Disease Control highlighted the potential of technology, such as telemedicine, to provide discreet reproductive health information.

As Nigeria advances policies and partnerships aimed at reducing teenage pregnancy, there is optimism for healthier and more empowered adolescents. Ms. Maureen Okoh called for community-based programs to prioritize reproductive health education, urging the involvement of parents, educators, and policymakers.
