The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), CM Shehu Mohammed has highlighted the importance of digitized identity tracking to enhancing national security in Nigeria while also noting FRSC’s pivotal role in national security through collaboration with other security agencies.

He made this known through his conference paper delivered by the FRSC Assistant Corps Marshal, ACM Adeoye Irelewuyi at the National Security Conference and Awards organized by the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP) in Lagos on Wednesday 9th of October, 2024.

Corps Marshal Shehu Muhammed indicated that focusing on the strategic integration of identity tracking systems and the digitization of the National Driver’s License (NDL) and National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) will greatly contribute to promoting Nigeria’s national security framework.

He, however, identified that some challenges such as agency-related insecurities, concerns over network speeds, fears of data loss or security breaches, risks of inaccurate data entries, and deliberate falsification can compromise national security.

A key part of FRSC’s initiative is its mobile application, which allows the public to verify driver’s license and vehicle information, bolstering transparency and data integrity. The Corps also underscored how its centralized databases contribute to improved surveillance and border control efforts, enhancing Nigeria’s overall security infrastructure.

The Corps works closely with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to track vehicles and owners, aiding investigations and helping recover stolen vehicles. Moreover, its digitized identity verification system has proven effective in curbing fraud, reducing impersonation, and supporting agencies like the NSA, Police, and EFCC in investigative operations.

The Assistant Corps Marshal, ACM Adeoye Irelewuyi noted that the ease of access to driver information through digital platforms not only prevents fraud and impersonation but also promotes public safety and national security. The presentation further lauded the benefits of digitizing the driver’s license system, which has improved the accuracy of data, streamlined service delivery, and supported national security agencies in tracking offenders. FRSC’s efforts demonstrate how technological advancements in digitization and identity tracking play a critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s security landscape.

Meanwhile, the FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed bagged the NAOSNP Man of the Year Award presented on behalf of the National Association of Online Security News Publishers by the Honourable Minister of State for Police Affairs, Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.
