The abuse of drugs and other harmful substances is a menace in the Nigerian society. It is a major contributor of insecurity, crime and criminality in Nigeria.

For the new Area F Commander, ACP Idowu Ebenezer Olanrewaju, drug abuse is a big concern which makes him to shed tears about the future of the country. He expressed his worry during his familiarization and interactive session with community and stakeholders of Alausa division when he paid his maiden visit to them last Thursday 24th January,  Trek Africa Newspaper can report. ‘Before I got to Area P, all I know was marijuana but now I know several others. One day, when my officers were opening bags of drugs they recovered from suspects, unconsciously I started shedding tears. Are these the leaders we want to leave the future for? Let’s make it a priority to preach against this menace.’

‘Parents have a lot to do. Traditional rulers, clergymen, CDAs, CDCs, we have a lot to do. Mention the adverse effects of all these things to the younger generation. It is ravaging everywhere, that is why we have these security challenges. The issue of cultism is taking over the whole process starting from use of hard drugs’, Trek Africa Newspaper can report.

On other ways the stakeholders can help the Police, Olanrewaju said: ‘Whenever you catch somebody breaking your shop and you bring it to the station, don’t just walk away, we need evidence, we need your statement to prosecute. Without you following through, we won’t be able to prosecute.’

‘Criminals spend more money than the regular person. Yahoo boys, ritualists don’t mind spending millions in your hotel per night but you don’t care because you are collecting money. Whenever anyone is coming to your hotel, screen them, don’t let them implicate you. Install every technology device you need to install. If you see any strange face during the day, report them, they may be sent to come and see what is happening. My people, please don’t be tired, God will see us through’, Olanrewaju remarked.

The DPO of Alausa division, CSP Elizabeth Oluwatoyin Opadola also made a request to the new Area Commander in order to do their jobs better. ‘I wish to urge the Area Commander to use his good office by assisting the division with more manpower for utmost provision of security to enhance the peace which the division and the community is currently witnessing.’
