With the delay necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, many leaders and administrators could have packed their bags and assume that nothing fruitful can be achieved again in the year 2020 and start planning for 2021. But not the Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, Hon. Funmilayo Akande-Mohammed who no sooner than the lockdown was lifted in Lagos continued her gallant endeavors of community building and social development.

The people of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA are better for it as they have now been bequeathed a new health centre to cater to their medical needs. What more? This feat was accomplished in less than three months, only awaiting official commissioning to come into service delivery.

Chairman, Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, Hon. Mrs. Funmilayo Akande-Mohammed (3rd left); Vice Chairman, Hon. Hakeem Balogun; Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Wasiu Yusuf (2nd right) and others inside the health center during the Chairman’s inspection visit.

Trek Africa Newspaper Monitored her inspection visit to the facility, Mrs. Funmilayo Akande-Mohammed expressed her joy at the project, ‘this project started immediately after the lockdown, not up to three months.’

On the reasons for the project, the council boss said: ‘what we considered is the problem our people face in terms of health care. We have three areas that make up Apapa-Iganmu LCDA which are Orile, Ijora Badiya, and Marine bridge. Many pregnant women have to go far when they fall into labor. I deemed it fit to put a health centre here at least for first aid and I thank God for the team that I have and we can see the results. The health centre is well supplied with standard hospital beds, air conditioners, fans, and television sets in the wards. We will also put in place medical equipment that you can find in a general hospital. We are here for inspection and awaiting the Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for commissioning of this project and many other projects we have done.’

On her plans for maintenance and sustainability, Hon. Akande-Mohammed stated that she will always monitor activities in the facility, ‘there is nothing God has helped me achieve that I don’t ensure I follow up. We will ensure that this place is properly maintained. We have a medical doctor in the LCDA and we are looking at getting another one that can work on part time basis so that in cases of emergency, there will always be a doctor to attend to people.’

Upon sighting their council chairman, many women in the community were full of happiness and showed their readiness to enjoy the health facility when it finally becomes operational.
