Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, popularly known as Omo Sexy, has revealed that she has never received royalties for her 30 years of work in the Nigerian movie industry.

The actress lamented the situation, highlighting the challenges performers face in earning residual income from films they have featured in over the years.

Her revelation has renewed conversations about intellectual property rights, royalty payments and the need for a functional compensation structure in Nollywood.

Omotola’s comments have reignited discussions about the absence of a structured royalty and residual payment system in Nollywood. In June 2025, she had similarly contrasted her experience in Hollywood, where she received monthly residual payments from two test projects, with her more than 310 Nollywood productions, which generated no residual payments for her. She is calling attention to the need for better industry structures that protect actors and ensure they can continue earning from their creative contributions.

The bigger question: How can Nollywood continue to grow globally without a sustainable royalty system for its actors?
