Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has pledged to resign from office if Nigerians fail to begin experiencing positive changes within one year of an ADC administration led by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

Amaechi made the declaration during an interview on AIT’s Democracy Today programme, where he outlined the priorities of the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, an incoming ADC administration must demonstrate visible progress within its first year in office, although he clarified that he was not promising to solve every problem facing the country within 12 months.

“If Nigeria does not begin to change, one year after we have come to office, come to me, I will resign,” Amaechi said.

He further explained that Nigerians should at least begin to feel a difference in their daily lives within the first year of the proposed administration.

Three major areas Amaechi says must be addressed

The former Minister of Transportation identified security, education and the economy as three critical sectors that must receive urgent attention if Nigeria is to make meaningful progress.

“You must deal with three things. You must deal with security, you must deal with education, you must deal with the economy before this country can progress,” he stated.

Amaechi also identified corruption as a major obstacle to national development, arguing that public funds meant for infrastructure and essential services were being diverted into private pockets.

He maintained that reducing corruption would make more resources available for addressing the country’s developmental challenges.

Amaechi criticises Tinubu’s economic policies

The ADC vice-presidential candidate also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the petrol subsidy, arguing that the policy had not translated into sufficient improvements in the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.

He expressed concern over rising poverty, hunger and Nigeria’s dependence on imported finished goods.

He questioned how some Nigerians continued to spend lavishly at social gatherings amid the economic difficulties confronting many households.

Amaechi further recalled seeing Nigerians boo President Tinubu during the president’s movement from the Lagos International Airport to his residence in Lagos.

He expressed confidence that an ADC government would improve the country’s conditions and restore public confidence in leadership.

Amaechi reiterates his resignation pledge

In a separate interview with NewsCentral TV on November 6, 2026, Amaechi again said he would not remain in government if he failed to perform his responsibilities.

When asked whether he would resign as vice-president if he underperformed, he reportedly answered in the affirmative. Latest Breaking News – News Central TV

However, an important subsequent development occurred on November 5, 2026, when a Nigerian court reportedly set aside the processes that produced the ADC leadership and Atiku’s nomination. The party rejected the ruling and indicated that it would appeal. Reuters

The political and legal developments surrounding the ADC are therefore still unfolding.
