OBASA RETREATS TO AGEGE REPS RACE AFTER SETBACKS IN GOVERNORSHIP, SENATE AMBITIONS

The political path of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, has taken another sharp turn.
After months of speculation over a bid for higher office, Obasa is now set to contest the Agege Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move marks a retreat from two bigger targets – the Lagos State governorship and the Lagos West Senatorial seat – both of which ran into strong headwinds inside the All Progressives Congress.
FROM ALAUSA TO AGIDINGBI TO AGEGE
For over a year, Obasa’s name featured prominently in conversations around Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s successor. As the longest-serving Speaker in Lagos history and a key figure in the Agege political machine, he was seen as a natural contender.
But that ambition stalled. High-level consultations within the APC, including sessions with the Governance Advisory Council, shifted the tide. Party elders, with the reported blessing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, coalesced around Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred flagbearer for Alausa in 2027.
With the governorship door narrowing, Obasa recalibrated. He turned his sights to the Senate, eyeing the Lagos West seat currently held by Senator Idiat Adebule.
The senatorial push gained early whispers of support in some party quarters. Lagos West is the largest senatorial district in Nigeria by voter population, and Obasa’s statewide legislative clout made him a serious prospect.
Yet that route also met resistance. Pushback came from the party’s national leadership and its influential women’s wing. Their argument was blunt: Senator Adebule is the only female senator from the South-West. Dropping her would damage the party’s gender balance in the National Assembly and hurt its optics ahead of 2027.
THE PRESIDENTIAL ADVICE
Faced with narrowing options, Obasa was advised to step down the ladder of ambition. Multiple party sources confirmed that President Tinubu personally asked the Speaker to consider the House of Representatives instead.
The specific seat: Agege Federal Constituency, currently occupied by Hon. Wale Ahmed.
It is a constituency Obasa knows intimately. He represented Agege State Constituency 1 in the Lagos Assembly for six terms before becoming Speaker. The federal seat would be a return to his home base, but on the national stage.
Since the directive, Obasa has begun what insiders describe as “quiet but strategic mobilisation” across Agege. He has reopened lines with ward leaders, market associations, youth groups, and the council structure he helped build over two decades.
The twist is personal. Until recently, Obasa had thrown his weight behind Mr Egunjobi, a known ally, for the same House of Representatives seat. That endorsement has now been withdrawn as Obasa prepares to run himself.
Grassroots meetings have increased in the last three weeks. Ward chairmen in Isale-Oja, Dopemu, and Oko-Oba have confirmed visits from the Speaker’s political team. “He’s not campaigning openly yet. But the body language is clear,” one LGA exco member said.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR AGEGE POLITICS
The Agege Federal Constituency has been held by Hon. Wale Ahmed since 2019. Ahmed, a former Commissioner and one-time state party secretary, also has deep roots in the area.
Obasa’s entry sets up a potential clash of APC heavyweights in a primary. It also tests the party’s internal zoning and loyalty dynamics. Agege has long been Obasa’s stronghold. But federal tickets are decided by more than local popularity — GAC input, presidential preference, and state executive backing all matter.
Party sources say the Speaker’s move is being framed as “party directive compliance” rather than personal desperation.
Political observers say Obasa’s recalibration reflects the realities of Lagos APC politics in the Tinubu era. Ambition is allowed, but alignment is survival.
For Obasa, the retreat to Agege may be less a demotion and more a strategic hold. The House of Representatives offers a national platform, committee chairmanship prospects, and a seat at the table in Abuja. It also keeps him in active politics while younger aspirants wait their turn.
The APC primary for House of Representatives seats will be held in May 2026. Until then, Agege has become the latest flashpoint in Lagos’s 2027 buildup.
SURVIVAL OVER STATURE
Obasa has been the Speaker since 2015. He survived impeachment moves, executive tensions, and multiple assembly crises. Each time, he emerged stronger.
This time, the fight was not in the chamber but in the party’s backrooms. By accepting Agege, he avoids a damaging primary loss for governor or Senate and retains relevance.
In Lagos APC, timing and loyalty often beat ambition.
For now, the man who once eyed Alausa is heading back to Agege – not as Speaker, but as an aspirant.
