Fani-Kayode’s trial stalled over alleged heart-related ailment

The trial of ex-Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, was yesterday stalled at a Federal High Court in Lagos.

His counsel, Norrison Quakers (SAN) told the trial judge, Rilwan Aikawa that he was hospitalised for heart-related ailment.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Fani-Kayode in an alleged N4.9billion fraud.

Quakers prayed for an adjournment and promised to provide the court with a medical report to back the claim of ill health.

But, counsel to the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo, who did not oppose the application for adjournment, called the attention of the court to the provision of Section 396 (4) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

The section stipulates that no party, in a criminal case, could have more than five adjournments.

Oyedepo called the attention of Justice Aikawa to the fact that already; the case had been adjourned twice at the instance of Fani-Kayode.

Justice Aikawa adjourned the matter to February 28 and March 1 and 2, 2018, after entertaining arguments from both parties.

The EFCC had re-arraigned Fani-Kayode on a 17 counts of money laundering alongside the former Minister of State for Finance, Nenadi Usman, who was listed as the first defendant in the charge.

The third and fourth defendants in the case are one Danjuma Yusuf and a company, Joint Trust Dimensions Limited.
